Celebrating the best of city and regional magazines

Columbia, MO-City and Regional Magazine Association announced 28 winning magazines at its 16th Annual City Magazine Awards at the association's Annual Conference May 7, 2001 in Minneapolis.

Professional journalists, designers and photographers from magazines around the country, along with University of Missouri-Columbia Journalism School faculty, judged the more than 880 entries submitted for this year's contest. The annual City Magazine Awards contest is open to CRMA's 86 member and 27 associate publications, as well as other qualifying city and regional publications.

This year, 63 gold, bronze or silver awards were given in 21 categories. The awards recognize excellence in design, writing, feature stories, photography and special issues.

Philadelphia Magazine won the most individual awards, earning recognition in six categories: food/dining criticism, regular column, reporting, personality profile, cover and designer of the year.

Other top winners include Boston Magazine and Texas Monthly, both winning five awards. Indianapolis Monthly, Yankee, Milwaukee Magazine and Chicago Magazine took home four awards each.

The ceremony's most-secret awards, whose winners aren't notified before the conference, are the general-excellence awards. The general-excellence entries are divided into three circulation-based categories.

This year's general-excellence winners are: Cincinnati, Memphis, 64, D Magazine, Columbus Monthly, Indianapolis Monthly, Texas Monthly, Boston Magazine and Atlanta.
