Philadelphia Magazine, Indianapolis Monthly and Austin Monthly won the coveted general excellence awards in their circulation categories in the 29th Annual National City and Regional Magazine Awards competition announced May 19 at CRMA’s annual conference in Washington, DC.

Philadelphia Magazine swept this year’s awards, claiming a stunning six prizes. 5280 (Denver), Boston Magazine, Los Angeles Magazine, and Texas Monthly all scored three awards. Chicago Magazine, Cincinnati Magazine and Seattle Met each picked up two awards. Seven other magazines — Austin Monthly, Baltimore Magazine, Indianapolis Monthly, Pittsburgh Magazine, Rhode Island Monthly, Sactown and Washingtonian — won single awards.

Philadelphia Magazine took top honors in three writing categories. Vicki Glembocki won the Column Writing category for her wry, subversive columns, while Steve Volk won the Profile Writing category for his troubling portrait of a notorious abortion doctor convicted of murder. Philadelphia’s Jason Fagone won the Feature Story category for detailing a group of researchers’ quest to cure cancer with a revolutionary new treatment in “Patient No. 7.” Philadelphia also won in the Leisure and Lifestyle Interest category with its “Summer Guide,” and in the Ancillary General Interest Category with G Philly.

Boston Magazine won in the categories of Photography, Civic Journalism, and Ancillary Home/Shelter. For Boston’s muckraking Civic Journalism win, writer Rachel Slade indicted the systems that daily mess with the lives of Bostonians. Los Angeles Magazine took top honors in Arts & Culture Writing for Steve Erickson’s strong, nuanced writing; Los Angeles also won the Feature Design and Special Issue categories for its “Crime in LA” issue. Texas Monthly’s “50 Best BBQ Joints…in the World!!” won in the category of Food or Dining Feature Package. Texas Monthly also won Cover Excellence and Reporting, the latter for Mimi Swartz’ nuanced story of a decorated head coach who put up a fight after she was forced to resign. 5280 (Denver) won the reader the Reader Service category for its rigorously reported A-to-Z guide to marijuana. 5280 also took the Excellence in Writing category for its stellar December issue, which included a somber portrait of Columbine High School’s outgoing principal. 5280’s Robert Sanchez, who wrote the Columbine story, was named Writer of the Year for his polished tone and deep reporting.

Chicago Magazine took the Excellence Online and E-Newsletter categories. Cincinnati Magazine’s Grace Saunders was named Designer of the Year, while the magazine also won the Excellence in Design category for its December issue. Seattle Met won the Magazine Section category for its “Mudroom.” James Ross Gardner scored Seattle Met top honors in the Essay/Commentary category for his personal tale of battling mortality in the age of Google.

Austin Monthly and Indianapolis Monthly won for General Excellence in their circulation categories, Washingtonian won the Multiplatform Storytelling category for its “45 Hikes and Bikes” package, and Sactown’s Hank Shaw won for Food or Dining Writing. Baltimore Magazine took top honors in the Spread Design category, Rhode Island Monthly won for the Ancillary/Weddings category, and Pittsburgh Magazine’s Virginia Montanez took the Blog Column category for her “PittGirl” column.

More than 100 judges, including representatives from publications such as AARP The Magazine, Advertising Age, Atavist, Better Homes and Gardens, Country Living, Discover, Elle, Entertainment Weekly, ESPN The Magazine, Esquire, Everyday with Rachel Ray, Fast Company, Food Network Magazine, GQ, Harvard Business Review, Houston Press, Marie Claire, Martha Stewart Weddings, Men’s Health, National Geographic, New York Magazine, Outside, Oxford American, People, Popular Science, Redbook, Rolling Stone, Runner’s World, Southern Living, Sports Illustrated,, Taste of Home, TIME, Scientific American, The American Prospect,, The New Republic, The Stranger, The Village Voice and The Washington Post, as well as journalism professors from the Missouri School of Journalism, selected the finalists.
